How to fill in a 32 team bracket
Write the teams on lines 1 to 32 in seed order. In the round of 32 the two seeds of every game add up to 33; the top quarter of the bracket is 1 vs 32, 16 vs 17, 8 vs 25 and 9 vs 24. Seeds 1–4 are in different quarters, so they can only meet from the semifinals on.
A 32 team bracket takes 5 rounds and 31 games: 16 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1. Games are numbered 1 to 31. It prints on one portrait letter page; the lines are narrow, so short team names or initials work best.
Fewer than 32 teams: byes
With 17 to 31 teams use this bracket and leave the lowest seeds empty as byes for the top seeds. 24 teams give seeds 1–8 a bye and play 23 games; 20 teams give seeds 1–12 a bye and play 19 games. With 16 teams or fewer, use the 16 team bracket.
