Formats
Single elimination
Lose once and you’re out. Byes go to the top seeds.
Double elimination
Out after two losses: winners and losers brackets, then a grand final.
Round robin
Everyone plays everyone. A table with tie-breaks.
Groups + knockout
Round robin groups, then the top of each group play a bracket.
Swiss
A set number of rounds; each round pairs equal scores, no rematches.
Americano
Doubles mixer: a new partner every round; each player keeps their own points.
Mexicano
Doubles mixer by the standings: the top four play together, 1st + 4th v 2nd + 3rd.
King of the Court
Winners move up a court, losers move down; partners change every round.
How the schedules work
Round robin scheduleHow a round robin schedule is made with the circle method: n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 games, n − 1 rounds for an even number of teams, a bye each round for an odd number, with worked examples.
